Documentation of Water and Sanitation Best Practices and Reporting Tools in Mara River Basin

Abstract

Water is essential to life. Therefore, the way we extract it, use it and manage it is central to sustainable livelihoods for mankind and other life species that we share the planet earth with. LVCB through MRB/LVWATSAN II program seeks to support Sustainable Development of the Mara River Basin. With the support of USAID East Africa the project sought to develop the tools and document Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) best practices for sharing so as to improve service delivery in the WATSAN sector in the Mara River Basin (MRB). The MRB is one of drainage basins that feed into Lake Victoria and is functionally and ecologically related to the socioeconomic activities of the lake. The Mara River originates from the Napuiyapui swamp in the Mau Escarpment (2,932 m asl) and flows through the plains of Maasai Mara National Game Reserve in Kenya and Serengeti National Park in Tanzania before entering Lake Victoria (1,134 m asl). This guide on tools and emerging good practices on WATSAN within and beyond MRB is a response to the need to contribute to the attainment of sustainable development within MRB. When WATSAN good practices, lessons learned, success stories and experiences are shared and replicated then ultimately we shall fast tract attainment of sustainable development in MRB region.
