dc.description.abstractLake Victoria is the world’s second largest fresh-water lake and the largest in Africa, with a surface area of 68,800 km2. The Lake basin area covers 193,000 km2 with Tanzania occupying 44 per pent, Kenya 22 per pent, Uganda 16 per cent, Burundi 7 per cent and Rwanda 11 per cent. The size of the lake makes it a critical determinant of weather and climate in the region. Lake Victoria Basin has a population of about 30 million people of which approximately 25 million live in the three riparian states. i.e. about 30 % of the total population of the three countries (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda).en_US
