Mara river basin natural resources management institutional capacity needs assessment

Abstract/Overview

This report deals with the Natural Resources Management Institutional Needs Assessment of the Mara River Basin. The report gives an inventory of the institutions dealing with natural resources management and a detailed assessment of the capacities to fulfill their mandates. The report also gives the Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities, and Threats of the key institutions dealing with Natural Resources Management, in the areas of forestry, wildlife, and water resources, in the Mara River Basin, both in Kenya and Tanzania. The methodology used consisted of identifying key institutions dealing with the management of forests, wildlife and water resources in both Kenya and Tanzania. The institutions identified were the units of analysis in the assignment. Officers from the respective institutions were targeted for the interviews either individually, or where possible in groups. Literature review was also undertaken. The assessment focused on the mandates of the various institutions and groups, and how they were meeting them. The assessment also looked at challenges in implementing respective institutional mandates and how these would be overcome. A Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threat (SWOT) analysis was also undertaken
